Artist, Basuki Dasgupta: “Exploring Intricate Patterns and Reflections”

Basuki Dasgupta’s artistic portfolio is diverse and encompassing, ranging from free-associative, non-representational creations to depictions of his beloved puppet-like figures. His sources of inspiration span Bengali tribal lore, folk traditions, the symbolism of goddess Durga, the principle of Shakti, and Baul music.

Hailing from the small town of Bishnupur in West Bengal, known for its 18th-century terracotta temples, Dasgupta’s art reflects the earthy textures and patterns found in these historical structures. He now resides in Tumkur, where he translates the traditional decorative motifs of Indian temple architecture into dynamic and abstract shapes on textured murals.

As a master of contemporary folk art, Basuki Dasgupta’s work, both figurative and non-figurative, is immersed in vibrant colors, rich symbolism, and mythology. His art serves as a poignant reflection on the intersection between rustic and modern, divine and human, creating a compelling dialogue that bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary expression.
