Artist, Meenal Singh : “Immersive Abstractions in Colour and Form”

Meenal Singh’s practice unfolds as a deeply intuitive dialogue between material, movement, and emotion. Working predominantly in oil on canvas, she moves away from conventional tools, allowing the natural behaviour of pigment to dictate the language of her compositions. The result is a body of work that feels organic and expansive, where colour flows into vast, immersive terrains that resemble imagined landscapes and inner topographies.

Her paintings are marked by a commanding sense of scale and presence. Large format works draw the viewer inward, dissolving the distance between observer and artwork. Rather than being viewed from the outside, her canvases invite participation, creating an experience that is both immediate and enveloping. Over time, her visual vocabulary has evolved from densely layered, high energy compositions into works that embody quietude, clarity, and a refined sense of control.

At the core of her practice lies an exploration of colour as a carrier of meaning. Each hue and tonal relationship is approached with sensitivity, reflecting layered cultural associations and emotional resonance. Her abstractions do not impose narratives but instead open a space for personal interpretation, where viewers respond instinctively to the interplay of light, transparency, and depth.

Her foundation in architecture continues to shape her artistic perspective. Concepts of structure, balance, and spatial awareness are subtly embedded within her paintings, even as the surfaces appear fluid and unrestrained. This duality between discipline and spontaneity defines her approach. For Meenal, the act of painting is less about control and more about enabling the medium to find its own form, guided by an underlying architectural sensibility.

Nature remains a quiet but persistent influence. Rather than depicting the environment directly, her works distil its essence through abstracted forms, textures, and atmospheres. Patterns found in the natural world, the rhythm of growth, and the passage of time are translated into visual experiences that feel both familiar and elusive.

Her journey into art emerged through a strong academic grounding in architecture. She graduated from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi and went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Architectural Conservation from Texas A and M University in the United States. Further expanding her practice, she studied metal sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC.

Today, Meenal Singh lives and works between her studio in Bangalore and a reforested landscape in Denkanikottai, Tamil Nadu. Since 2014, she has been actively involved in restoring native ecology on this land, transforming it into a thriving deciduous forest. This sustained engagement with the environment continues to inform her work, lending it a sense of depth, sensitivity, and quiet introspection.
