A fourth-generation master of the revered Kalamkari tradition, Dr. Niranjan Jonnalagadda stands among the foremost contemporary custodians of the Srikalahasti school of Kalamkari. Born in 1967 into a distinguished lineage of artists, he inherited a profound visual and cultural legacy from his father, the celebrated Padma Shri awardee Jonnalagadda Gurrappa Chetty.
Blending academic depth with artisanal mastery, Niranjan pursued postgraduate studies in English while simultaneously immersing himself in the discipline of traditional Kalamkari. His artistic practice extends beyond painting into extensive research on temple iconography, mythology, and classical Indian aesthetics. Travels across sacred temple towns, coupled with his study of classical dance, enriched the poise, movement, and narrative grace of his figures.
Working exclusively with natural dyes and intricate freehand techniques, his compositions reinterpret epics, folklore, and devotional imagery through a refined contemporary sensibility while remaining deeply rooted in centuries-old tradition. His celebrated works are distinguished by lyrical detailing, rhythmic line work, and a rare understanding of narrative composition.
Recipient of numerous national honours, including the prestigious Shilpjan Award from the Government of India, Niranjan has conducted workshops and exhibitions internationally across Europe, Asia, and the United States. His research collaborations with institutions and museums in London, Cambridge, Manchester, and Norwich further position him as both practitioner and scholar – preserving, documenting, & advancing the timeless language of Kalamkari for a global audience.
