Nitai Das : Celebrating India’s Living Traditions Through Colour, Symbolism & Human Narratives

Based in Delhi, Artist, Nitai Das is recognised for his evocative visual language that bridges folk traditions with contemporary social reflection. Trained at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1991, Das developed a practice deeply rooted in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage while remaining acutely responsive to modern life.

His paintings are distinguished by their vibrant palettes, rhythmic compositions, and expressive figurative forms that draw inspiration from regional folk idioms across India. Through scenes of farmers, performers, students, travellers, and ordinary citizens, Das transforms everyday existence into layered visual narratives infused with symbolism and philosophical undertones.

Rather than documenting life literally, the artist imbues his subjects with allegorical meaning, often referencing cycles of creation, spirituality, and human interconnectedness. In works such as Dance of Life, mythological resonance subtly emerges through contemporary imagery, revealing the artist’s fascination with timeless existential themes.

Das’s compositions possess both theatricality and intimacy, balancing decorative richness with emotional depth. His works invite viewers into worlds where tradition is neither static nor nostalgic, but continuously evolving through lived experience. Exhibited extensively across India and internationally, Nitai Das remains celebrated for his ability to reinterpret Indian cultural memory through a distinctly modern and contemplative lens.
