Nitish Bhattacharya : “Between Form and Flux, The Poetics of Pure Abstraction”

Born in 1973, Artist, Nitish Bhattacharya emerges as a compelling voice in contemporary abstraction, orchestrating a dynamic interplay between colour, gesture, and spatial tension. Working predominantly with acrylics on expansive canvases and paper, his compositions unfold as charged encounters – where sweeping brushwork and layered textures collide in rhythmic intensity.

Bhattacharya’s visual language resists immediate definition. His surfaces, alive with restless movement and chromatic depth, invite the viewer into an open-ended inquiry – where meaning is neither fixed nor prescribed. Amidst this apparent chaos, fleeting geometric structures surface, anchoring the eye before dissolving back into the flux.

Trained at the Indore School of Art, where he completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Painting, the artist’s early practice was rooted in figuration. His gradual shift toward non-representational art reflects a deliberate stripping away of ornamentation – an evolution toward essence rather than depiction.

Yet, Bhattacharya’s abstraction is not an abandonment of form, but a transformation of it. His works articulate a space where the visible and the intangible converge, allowing emotion, energy, and intuition to take precedence over narrative.  Exhibited across prominent venues, including Jehangir Art Gallery and India Habitat Centre, his works are held in significant collections such as Bharat Bhavan and leading private foundations.  B

ased in Mumbai, Bhattacharya continues to expand his painterly vocabulary – creating immersive, contemplative fields that oscillate between structure and dissolution, and reaffirm painting as a space of infinite possibility.
