Sanjiivv Sankpal : “Spiritual Rural Narratives Infused With Colour, Harmony & Indian Modernism”

Artist, Sanjiivv Sankpal is a multidisciplinary artist whose works draw deeply from India’s spiritual philosophy, rural traditions, and meditative visual culture. Originating from the village of Nipani in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur region, Sankpal has developed a distinctive artistic language shaped by both indigenous aesthetics & the influence of modern masters including S. H. Raza, M. F. Husain, Gauguin, Matisse & Manet.

Working across painting & sculpture, he constructs richly textured compositions where colour, form, and symbolism converge into emotionally resonant narratives. His canvases are marked by earthy tonalities illuminated with vibrant bursts of crimson, saffron, emerald, and cobalt, evoking the elemental energies of earth, water, fire, air, and space — principles that remain central to his artistic philosophy.

Sankpal’s imagery frequently explores themes of devotion, human relationships, and rural femininity, often portraying faceless women, maternal figures, and lyrical references to Radha-Krishna iconography within dreamlike village settings. Architectural motifs inspired by old Indian settlements and Goan facades further enrich his layered visual vocabulary.

Balancing abstraction with figuration, his works reveal expressive textures and painterly movement when viewed closely, while from a distance they resolve into harmonious compositions imbued with serenity and grace. Widely exhibited across India and internationally, including Dubai, Sankpal has received numerous accolades for his contribution to contemporary Indian art. His practice ultimately reflects a search for cultural continuity, spiritual balance, and universal harmony through the language of colour and form.
