Sumanto Chowdhury : “Dreamlike Indian Landscapes Woven Through Colour, Memory & Architecture”

Born in 1979 in West Bengal, Artist, Sumanto Chowdhury creates luminous imagined worlds where architecture, landscape, and memory merge into richly detailed visual narratives. A graduate of Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University with advanced studies in printmaking from the University of Hyderabad, Chowdhury’s practice seamlessly bridges painting, sculpture, etching, and mixed media.

His compositions are instantly recognisable for their radiant palettes  – vivid pinks, emerald greens, soft blues & earthy reds  –  arranged into expansive panoramic landscapes that oscillate between the rural, urban, and the imagined. Deeply influenced by Indian miniature painting traditions, his works reveal extraordinary attention to architectural intricacy, decorative surfaces, and layered spatial depth.

Drawing inspiration from Hyderabad’s lakes and historic architecture, the quiet lyricism of Santiniketan, and fragments gathered through travel across India, Chowdhury constructs idyllic terrains where nature and habitation coexist in poetic harmony. Though human figures are often absent, traces of their existence resonate throughout his painted environments, lending his works a contemplative stillness.

His multidisciplinary approach extends into fiberglass sculpture and three-dimensional works, further expanding his exploration of space and form. Widely exhibited across India, Chowdhury has received several notable recognitions, including honours from the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation and the South Zone Cultural Centre. Today, his works are celebrated for their vibrant optimism, intricate craftsmanship & uniquely contemporary interpretation of the Indian landscape.
