Source: HOUSETHOME

Born in 1967 in Solapur, Artist, Douglas John is celebrated for his evocative explorations of urban experience, light & collective memory through painting, sculpture & video art. A graduate of the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art, where he later became a respected faculty member, John has cultivated a multidisciplinary practice deeply informed by the spirit & visual complexity of Mumbai.

Arriving in the city as a teenager, he became captivated by its layered architecture, shifting light, crowded bazaars, colonial facades & restless human energy. These impressions evolved into richly atmospheric works that investigate the emotional & physical experience of urban space. His early landscapes of Mumbai’s Victorian Gothic structures & bustling streets reveal a meticulous sensitivity to tonal transitions, spatial rhythm & transient light.

Influenced by artists such as S. H. Raza, N. S. Bendre & Western masters including Picasso and Van Gogh, Douglas John developed a visual language that merges Indian sensibilities with contemporary painterly techniques. His celebrated series on pilgrimage & spiritual processions further explores themes of devotion, movement & collective consciousness through luminous palettes & immersive compositions.

Beyond painting, his sculptural and video works transform everyday urban experiences into contemplative encounters with time and memory. Widely exhibited across India, John is the recipient of several prestigious honours, including the National Academy Award in 2019 for his acclaimed Inner Divinity series. Through his multifaceted practice, Douglas John continues to redefine contemporary Indian urban expression with intellectual depth and atmospheric intensity.
