: 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 - A Lakeside Pune Home in Birch & Balance
𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 - especially when it belongs to its creators.
For their 2,200 sqft lakeside apartment in Pune, Darshan & Ashish Jana of Jana Architects @janaarchitects, approached design 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦, 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 & 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴.
The four-bedroom residence unfolds in soft restraint.
Birch plywood, tactile textures & intimate nooks allow the interiors to speak in measured whispers rather than declarations. A minimal palette, layered with subtlety, shapes a calm so personal that even the smallest corners invite pause.
𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦...
Designing by the lake brought inherent challenges - humidity & fluctuating moisture levels demanded thoughtful choices. Conventional laminates gave way to Birch plywood, selected for its strength, durability & moisture-wicking properties. Left exposed & visually honest, the material withstands shifting conditions while retaining warmth & integrity.
𝘐𝘵𝘴 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 - allowing colour tones to be refreshed over time, ensuring the home can evolve with changing needs.
𝘈𝘵 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦.
Lime-washed walls and achromatic-toned flooring form a calming envelope. Birch plywood furniture anchors the spaces in earthy tactility, deliberately pared back yet never austere. Sculptural décor, custom artworks & carefully curated accents introduce personality - ensuring the minimalism feels lived-in rather than restrained.
"𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮-𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥, 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦-𝘤𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥-𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦," shares Darshan Jana with the #Housethome team.

: `𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨`, 𝙒𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙙 >> Set on the 13th floor amid one of Wakad’s busiest streets, this 1,470 sqft, 4BHK residence rises above the city’s constant motion as a calm, contemplative retreat. House of Arches designed by Design Firm @hootatsight, is imagined as a sanctuary - 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮.
The design unfolds in modern ethnic tones, guided by a consistent architectural language of soft teak arches, warm wood textures, pastel upholstery & clean detailing. The palette remains earthy & restrained, allowing materiality & form to lead. Sunlight streams generously through the home, heightening the warmth of timber & the gentle softness of fabric.
The living area is thoughtfully divided into two interconnected zones. The primary seating & dining space sits closer to the television unit & kitchen, encouraging effortless gatherings and daily interaction. The dining table acts as a spatial anchor - maintaining openness while subtly defining functions. Layered lighting enhances depth, adapting fluidly from day to evening.
At the entrance, a quiet reading nook sets a softer tone. A rocking chair paired with a bespoke book unit creates a moment of pause - a reflection of the family’s appreciation for stillness and ritual.
Inspired by traditional Wada architecture, teak arches & pillars establish rhythm without enclosure, framing spaces while preserving visual continuity.
At the lobby end, a handcrafted rattan arch panel reverently frames an inherited Saraswati artwork, grounding the home in emotional and spiritual memory.
The guest bedroom is reimagined as a flexible 0.5 room, transforming into a sacred mandir during Gauri - Ganpati festivities. A concealed folding bed ensures seamless conversion back into a guest suite, maintaining purpose without compromising sanctity.
House of Arches is a home where arches frame life gently & tradition meets modernity with quiet confidence.

The living area unfolds with a marble-clad unit wall and a serene temple space, balanced by the dining area beyond. A white sofa setting is elevated by a striking designer wall finished in lime wash paint, adding softness, depth, and personality.
The kitchen, bathed in daylight from a picture window, feels visually expansive while staying connected to its surroundings. Stone flooring grounds the space, reinforcing its role as the heart of the home.
The master bedroom pairs a fresh palette with an artistic backdrop for a polished yet uncluttered retreat. Thoughtfully designed wardrobes, display units, and layered cushions complete the composition. The dramatic black bathroom makes a bold statement, offset by warm brushed gold accents.

Designed by Aarthaa Design Studio @aarthaadesignstudio, this 2.5 bhk Bangalore apartment reimagines home as a space built not for trends, but for time. Created for a young family relocating from Gujarat, the design leans into warmth, repetition, and gentle geometry to ground a life still unfolding.
A semi-curved oak arch at the foyer sets the narrative, introducing a language of softness that flows seamlessly across rooms. In the living area, a matte cream, vertically-grooved TV wall conceals function with finesse, paired with floating oak-laminate storage and a black MS-framed display unit. Floor-to-ceiling windows dressed in sheers and biscuit-toned drapes bathe the space in diffused light, allowing materials and textures to breathe.
Private spaces continue the story with purpose. A compact home office pairs oak laminates with metallic cork wallpaper, while the daughter’s room blends adaptability and play through soft waves, blush-and-sage accents, cloud wallpaper, and child-friendly detailing. The master bedroom introduces a more layered mood - 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳, 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘴 & 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥.

This sentiment resonated deeply with the Mathur Family, who envisioned their New Home as such an oasis. Seeking a more spacious and art-filled environment during the pandemic, they merged two adjoining 3-bedroom apartments, creating a 3200 sq.m dwelling for their close-knit family, including their beloved cocker spaniel, Leo.
Alkove-Design @alkovedesign, the Architects for this project, blended traditional & contemporary interiors with a tropical modernist aesthetic. Principal Architect Komal Mittal shares, "𝘔𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴."
Crafted by Mumbai’s Master Craftsman Shaban Lakadwala, the furniture pieces are art in themselves, complemented by vibrant Nagaland textiles sourced by Mrs. Mathur. The home is further enriched with her curated paintings and artifacts. Repurposed timber from an old wada adds historical depth, symbolizing life cycles akin to the Ship of Theseus. "𝘔𝘳𝘴. The entrance passage sets the tone, imagined as a quiet court with classic black-and-white checkered flooring & a striking green door that signals personality at the very threshold. Beyond, the living room opens into a layered composition of earthy wooden floors softened by pastel blues, pinks, yellows & whites - woven seamlessly across laminates, paints, wallpapers & fabrics.

Designed by ARA Designs @ara.designss, this 6,500 sqft villa reimagines Alibaug’s traditional courtyard homes through a contemporary language that responds intuitively to climate, lifestyle & land.
Planned across a 1.5-acre parcel, the home is structured as a constellation of landscaped & water-filled courtyards, ensuring uninterrupted visual and spatial connections with nature. Every vantage point opens to greens, water, or sky, making the outdoors an ever-present participant rather than a backdrop.
At the centre, a glass-enclosed living room is conceived as an independent pavilion, opening to a Zen garden and wrapped by a water body that visually binds the house together. The swimming pool forms the villa’s primary focal point, edged by a deck on three sides that doubles as a social hub for gatherings and quiet leisure alike.
Designed with the realities of second-home living in mind, the emphasis remains firmly on shared spaces - living areas, dining zones, decks & courtyards - while six bedrooms and a den remain discreetly placed.
Materiality is deliberately restrained yet tactile. Concrete & locally sourced basalt define the structure, while continuous granite flooring enhances spatial flow. Wooden floors in the bedrooms add warmth & lightweight shingle-finished roofing responds sensitively to the tropical climate.
Villa Iksa stands as a quiet expression of tropical modernism: 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦.

: Beautifully designed by Studio Arcon @studioarcon & captured by Architectural Captures @architectural_captures, this pooja space in the Pune home `𝘚𝘸𝘢𝘳` is defined by stillness, light & quiet balance.
Set at the heart of the home, this pooja space is placed within an open-to-sky courtyard, aligned to the east & gently shaped by natural light. Reflections shift through the day, water lends a sense of calm & the space unfolds as a moment of pause - 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮.
Designed around balance, sunlight & faith, the pooja space remains restrained and contemplative, allowing silence and rhythm to take precedence. 🌺

: `𝙑𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙚`, 𝘉𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘶, 𝘈 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘵𝘩 >> In Bengaluru, this 1,400 sq ft residence is an exercise in gentle balance - cool tones softened by warmth, global references distilled into intimate moments & minimalism enriched through texture. Designed by Studio Couch Potato, led by Banu Sundar, the home was envisioned as a sanctuary for a well-travelled family of three seeking calm after long, demanding days.
With an understated palette as the foundation, texture takes centre stage. “𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘐 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘩,” shares Banu. Ashwood surfaces, fluted panels, boucle upholstery & handwoven accents layer the spaces with quiet richness. The living area, though compact, is anchored in connection - custom-designed seating, rattan lamps casting soft patterns, macramé wall art & subtle greenery creating a cocooned yet open feel.
The dining space flows seamlessly, marked by warm wood tones & patterned chair covers, while a bar-cum-crockery unit bridges function & design. Even the balcony is purposefully resolved: a slim wooden ledge doubles as a work counter, paired with high stools & a discreet sink, transforming it into a flexible retreat overlooking the pool.
Each private space carries its own mood. The master bedroom evokes Grecian serenity with an ocean-wave tapestry cascading from ceiling to bed wall, terrazzo-accented sconces, and a streamlined study nook. The daughter’s room introduces playful elegance through patterned pink walls, a trundle bed, and a cozy reading corner. A study-cum-guest room completes the home with refined restraint and adaptability.
Named "𝙑𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙚" - Swedish for warmth - the home reflects a rare client-designer synergy. As Banu notes, “𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥.” The result is a tranquil, deeply personal abode—an antidote to the city’s relentless pace.

The brief called for a home that embodies minimalism, functionality, and stillness - 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮, 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴.
Designed around a veranda that blurs the line between indoors and out, the villa is set on a generously open plot, where every space speaks to seamless indoor-outdoor connectivity, natural ventilation, and abundant daylight.
The façade, pristine in white, sets a serene tone. Accented with warm wooden doors and subtle ambient lighting, it highlights the clean architectural geometry. A timeless hipped roof lends climate resilience while adding classical grace to the structure.
𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴. The ceiling, expansive & calm, becomes a symbol of permanence & quiet presence. Wooden-framed windows flood the interiors with natural light that gently animates the spaces, dancing across matte-textured cabinetry and grounded marble flooring.
Furniture choices are intentional & poetic. In the dining area, soft boucle chairs gather around a monolithic timber-and-stone table - a gesture that unites nature with nurture, anchoring the home in the idea of food as communion.
Every detail reflects restraint and richness. From the warmth of wood to the elegance of marble, from the openness of form to the intimacy of light, the home is designed as a composition, not just construction. A space that feels timeless, quiet, and deeply lived in. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 - 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Spanning 4,000 sqft, this Mumbai residence reimagines a bare-shell apartment into a serene cocoon - where white Banswara marble and teak wood furniture strike a dialogue between austerity & warmth.
True to the ethos of Principal Designers Nupur Shah & Saahil Parikh, the home is planned with precision and clarity. Every inch is purposeful, ensuring zero wastage of space.
The layout divides the social and private seamlessly: living, dining and kitchen flow together on one side, while four generous bedrooms form the private wing.

Clean-lined yet soulful, the spaces are punctuated with art, accessories & rugs that add vibrancy without overwhelming the calm.
What emerges is a home that is both tactile and timeless. The white floors, walls and ceilings act as a canvas, allowing the sensuality of wood to anchor each room with depth and warmth. The design avoids ornamentation, instead celebrating proportion, material honesty and natural light.

For designer Banu Sundar, Principal at Studio Couch Potato @studio.couch.potato, the answer unfolded in her 4BHK Bengaluru residence, ‘𝘔𝘺𝘴𝘢’ - 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴.
Spanning 2,300 sqft, the home draws from Mediterranean hues & littoral textures to create a retreat that feels as grounding as the Aegean shores.
𝘈𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯: Minimal yet warm interiors that center the family. Pastel tones drift like sea mist across spaces, anchored by azure doors, sandy shades, shiplapped details & rattan lighting.
A graceful gypsum arch ushers guests into the breezy living zone. Here, rustic modernity takes shape through an ensemble of Magari armchairs, bespoke chandelier & a sculptural coffee table from Studio Objectory.
The dining area, sourced from Stanley, balances luxury & ease. An Italian marble-topped table gleams beneath driftwood accents, while a textured work by Prachi Kothari animates concrete walls. A sleek buffet console with jute rope knobs, a Studio Palasa planter, and a jute spread nod playfully to the nautical.
𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘴 - White cabinetry accented with oak wood flourishes, wine racks, and a breakfast counter designed for casual family meals.
Bedrooms line a sunlit corridor of family portraits. The master suite is restful, with a suede headboard set against shiplap and lime plaster, floating nightstands, and a Rug Republic cane bench.
Across every corner, Mysa exemplifies how architecture, art, and memory weave into a soulful sanctuary. As Banu reflects, “𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮.”
