KR Karthikeyan : “Reimagining Indian Folklore Through Ornate Contemporary Narrative & Symbolism”

Artist, KR Karthikeyan, creates visually opulent works that draw deeply from India’s mythology, temple traditions & folk memory. Based in Chennai, the artist began his creative journey through traditional temple stone carving & chariot wood carving, disciplines that continue to inform the intricate detailing and sculptural rhythm of his paintings.

His richly layered compositions unfold like contemporary manuscripts of Indian lore, populated with celestial figures, sacred trees, birds, fruits, animals & symbolic deities woven seamlessly into dreamlike landscapes. Themes of love, renewal, fertility, devotion & cultural memory emerge through vibrant colour fields & densely ornamented surfaces.

Karthikeyan’s celebrated Tree of Life series exemplifies his fascination with interconnectedness & continuity, where nature & humanity exist within a shared symbolic universe. Birds nest within flowering branches, figures emerge from foliage & mythological references subtly inhabit the canvas, creating narratives that feel timeless yet intensely alive.

Influenced equally by traditional Indian aesthetics & contemporary storytelling, the artist balances decorative exuberance with emotional intimacy. His paintings possess the atmosphere of oral folklore  – layered, rhythmic, and immersiveinviting viewers into worlds suspended between memory, mythology, and lived experience.  Exhibited widely across India & Singapore, Karthikeyan’s works celebrate the enduring vitality of Indian visual culture while reinterpreting its symbols for a contemporary audience. Through intricate craftsmanship and luminous palettes, he transforms inherited traditions into compelling modern narratives of identity, belonging, and collective memory.
