Lal Bahadur Singh : “Reimagining Rural India Through Symbolic Contemporary Visual Narratives”

Born in 1985 in Uttar Pradesh, Artist, Lal Bahadur Singh has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary Indian art through works that seamlessly intertwine rural memory, urban transformation & symbolic storytelling. Trained initially in the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara in Ghazipur before pursuing advanced studies at the prestigious College of Art, Singh developed a visual language deeply rooted in observation, narrative, and cultural reflection.

His paintings are characterised by vibrant palettes, intricate detailing, and striking juxtapositions of flora, fauna, and architectural space. Trees frequently occupy the centre of his compositions, accompanied by recurring motifs such as parrots, cows, bulls, and birds  – enduring symbols of India’s rural consciousness rendered with both reverence and contemporary wit.

What distinguishes Singh’s practice is his portrayal of urban environments devoid of human presence, where fragments of modernity coexist uneasily with elements of village life. Through these layered visual metaphors, the artist reflects upon migration, environmental change, and the shifting emotional landscapes of contemporary India.

Influenced by extensive travels across rural India and his continuing engagement with social theatre and community initiatives, Singh’s works possess both visual exuberance & underlying social sensitivity. His compositions balance decorative richness with conceptual depth, inviting viewers into worlds that are simultaneously nostalgic, surreal &  profoundly relevant to the evolving Indian experience.
