Artist, S Krishnappa: “Celebrating Tradition Through Art”

Krishnappa, born in 1945 near Bangalore, embarked on his artistic journey at Kala Mandir, Bangalore, and Nuthan Kala Mandir, Mumbai, under the guidance of renowned mentors such as A.N. Subha Rao, H.N. Haldankar, A.A. Almelkar, and S.N. Joshi from Bombay. His dedication and passion for art led him to earn a Diploma of Fine Arts. Krishnappa’s artistic talents also found expression in his role as an Art Designer at the Weaver’s Service Centre, a position he held until 2001.

Throughout his illustrious career, Krishnappa has made a significant impact on the art world, showcasing his talent through seven captivating solo exhibitions and participating in numerous group exhibitions. His artistic prowess has garnered him several awards, including the prestigious Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy Award in 1981 and 1983. Notably, he has received a total of 19 awards, six of which were bestowed upon him by the Andhra Academy of Arts in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1986, and 1987.

Krishnappa’s art is a vivid celebration of tradition, focusing on men adorned in festive rural attire who engage in the joy of making music and dancing to the rhythms of tradition. His paintings skillfully capture the rhythmic movements of these festive figures, accentuating the performers’ artistic abilities. With a vibrant and rich color palette, his artwork comes to life against textured backdrops, offering viewers a captivating glimpse into the essence of tradition and cultural celebration.
