Smitha G.S : “Where Memory Becomes Forest, Ritual & Living Myth”

Emerging from the lush cultural landscape of Kozhikode, Artist, Smitha G.S. creates immersive painted worlds where memory, ecology, and mythology converge with haunting intimacy. A self-taught artist, her practice is deeply rooted in the sensory rhythms of Malabar—its forests, rituals, textures, and unseen life forms.

Her compositions are populated by creatures often overlooked: snails, moths, ants, chameleons, and insects transformed into poetic protagonists within vast, dreamlike terrains. These delicate ecosystems unfold not as literal landscapes, but as psychological and spiritual spaces charged with symbolism and quiet wonder.

Smitha’s recent works increasingly weave human figures and regional ceremonial traditions into these layered environments, creating visual meditations on continuity, transformation, and coexistence. The boundaries between the natural and the human dissolve, allowing each element to exist in a state of perpetual becoming.

Working intuitively and without preparatory sketches, she builds her monumental canvases through instinctive layering—deep olive greens, luminous magentas, and earthen tones emerging as acts of remembrance and emotional release. Her process carries an immediacy that lends the works both vulnerability and power.

There is a deeply restorative quality to her practice. Drawing from personal memory and lived experience, Smitha transforms painting into a site of healing, reflection, and collective imagination.  Her work has been presented at significant cultural platforms including Kochi-Muziris Biennale and Lokame Tharavadu, extending her presence beyond traditional gallery spaces. Through her richly textured visual language, Smitha G.S. invites viewers into enchanted, living worlds—where nature remembers, rituals breathe, and the ordinary becomes profoundly sacred.
