Artist, Amritraj Koban : His depiction of the meditating Buddha has “captured the not the imagination of the viewers but has also come to announce his style of paintings”.
Amritraj Koban was born and brought up in Latur, Maharashtra in 1975. He graduated with a Government Diploma in Art (Drawing and Painting) from Pune in 1997. Amritraj is currently based out of Mumbai and is one of the go-to artists for paintings on the Buddha. His depiction of the meditating Buddha has captured the not the imagination of the viewers but has also come to announce his style of paintings.
The colors on his canvas are earthy with reds and ochres, and he surprisingly blends different shades of blue into the drawings to add contrast and depth to the paintings. Currently, he uses acrylic on canvas and has made detailed paintings of Ganesha, Buddha and Brahma/Trimurti. Amritraj’s style has genuinely emerged with his series on the Buddha. Be it the multitudinous faces of the Buddha depicted in square tiles on the canvas or the depiction of the Buddha’s life in the halo and body aura of the Buddha – Amritraj has managed to keep the expression on the face of the Buddha the same across so many paintings. It is not surprising that one feels drawn to such a consistent rendering.
Amritraj has also painted women as subjects on his canvas. He believes women to be more expressive and hence his desire to capture their emotions and expressions on the canvas.
