Artist, Chhotu Lal stands among the foremost contemporary practitioners of the Indian miniature tradition, working from his studio in Udaipur. His practice is distinguished by an exacting adherence to classical technique, combined with a quiet, contemporary sensibility that lends his compositions both precision and poetic depth.
Working primarily in watercolour on mica, alongside tempera, Lal employs a painstaking process rooted in heritage methods. His pigments are prepared by hand from natural minerals and vegetable extracts, while his brushes—often fashioned from feathers – allow for an extraordinary fineness of line. The resulting works possess a luminous delicacy, marked by intricate detailing and a refined, almost meditative stillness.
Lal’s imagery frequently draws upon mythological narratives, reinterpreted through a subtle modern lens. Rather than mere replication of tradition, his paintings evoke a dialogue between past and present, where classical iconography is rendered with renewed vitality and introspection.
A postgraduate in Drawing and Painting from Udaipur University, Lal was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence. His contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the State Art Award at the 31st Annual Art Exhibition in Jaipur and a silver medal at the 17th All India Exhibition of Painting in Udaipur.
His works have been exhibited extensively across India, with presentations in Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, and are held in significant private and institutional collections internationally.
