Born in Pune, Artist, Dattatraya Thombare is recognised for a contemplative visual language that seamlessly merges abstraction with figuration. Educated at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya and later at the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art, Thombare developed a practice rooted in the emotional & psychological dimensions of nature, humanity & perception.
His compositions exist within an intriguing space between the real and the imagined, where recognisable forms dissolve into layered abstractions and atmospheric colour fields. Through fluid figures, fragmented imagery, and multidimensional backgrounds, the artist constructs visual experiences that resist literal interpretation while remaining emotionally resonant.
Central to Thombare’s work is the idea of transformation – the constant morphing of reality, memory & inner consciousness. His canvases evoke fleeting impressions of landscapes, human presence, and lived experience, all filtered through a meditative and introspective sensibility. Rich tonal harmonies and carefully orchestrated textures lend his works a quiet depth and spatial ambiguity. A recipient of several distinguished honours including the Maharashtra State Award and the Bombay Art Society Award, Thombare has exhibited extensively across India at prominent institutions and galleries. Alongside his artistic practice, he has remained deeply engaged with art education in Mumbai, continuing to shape and inspire future generations of artists through both teaching and practice.
