Source: HOUSETHOME

Born in 1962 in Hyderabad, Artist, Fawad Tamkanat is celebrated as one of the most compelling contemporary painters to emerge from South India. A gold medallist in both Bachelor of Fine Arts from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Hyderabad, Tamkanat has built a distinguished international career marked by constant reinvention and technical mastery.

Working across painting, printmaking, and installation art, the artist’s practice moves fluidly between realism and abstraction, tradition and modernity. His works are deeply informed by the visual energy of Hyderabad — its crowded streets, fading architecture, marketplaces, labourers, fakirs, and evolving urban culture — all rendered with remarkable detail and atmospheric intensity.

Tamkanat’s compositions often unfold like cinematic narratives, balancing chaos and harmony through layered textures, fragmented spaces, and vibrant tonal contrasts. Whether working in acrylic, monochromatic drypoint, or expressive mixed media, he captures the emotional rhythm of everyday life with exceptional observational sensitivity.

International residencies and collaborations, particularly in Scandinavia and Denmark, significantly expanded his engagement with printmaking and contemporary visual language. His works are housed in prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Imago Mundi Collection, while his exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and India have established him as a globally recognised artistic voice.

Through constantly evolving themes and mediums, Fawad Tamkanat continues to chronicle the layered realities of contemporary existence, transforming ordinary urban moments into deeply textured visual poetry.
