Born in 1982 in Maharashtra, Artist, Nivas Kanhere creates contemplative abstract works shaped by memory, rhythm & the emotional architecture of lived experience. Educated at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya and later at the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art, Kanhere’s practice evolved from academic portraiture into a deeply intuitive exploration of abstraction and spatial consciousness.
His paintings navigate the delicate tension between holding and release, presence and absence, movement and stillness. During the pandemic years, vibrant chromatic surfaces emerged as gestures of resistance against uncertainty, while later works gravitated toward meditative blues, greys & muted expanses that evoke silence, distance & introspection.
Working with palette knives, rollers, layered pigments, and textured surfaces, Kanhere transforms gesture into emotional language. Sedate geometric forms dissolve into vast atmospheric spaces, while translucent layers suggest shifting memories and the fluid passage of time. His canvases possess a rhythmic quality where body movement, breath & instinct become visible through paint.
At the philosophical core of his practice lies a childhood memory of sitting beside a flowing village stream – attempting briefly to hold water in his hands before releasing it back into motion. This poetic interplay between the finite & infinite continues to shape his visual language today. Each painting becomes an act of immersion and surrender, where abstraction functions not as escape, but as a profound engagement with inner and external realities.
Collected internationally across Europe, the Middle East, Australia & the United States, Nivas Kanhere’s works continue to expand the language of contemporary Indian abstraction through emotional depth, restraint & luminous spatial sensitivity.
