Born in 1971 in the village of Muthukulam, Kerala, Artist, Suresh Muthukulam stands among the foremost contemporary custodians of the ancient Kerala mural tradition. Rooted in the rigorous gurukula system of artistic training, his practice reflects decades of disciplined apprenticeship, spiritual inquiry, and unwavering dedication to preserving one of India’s most revered classical art forms.
Trained under master muralists through the esteemed Guruvayur Devaswom tradition, Muthukulam combines technical precision with profound philosophical depth. His works are distinguished by luminous natural pigments, intricate linework & layered compositions inspired by Hindu mythology, devotional narratives & Kerala’s rich visual heritage.
Employing traditional mural techniques such as translucent colour washes and mineral-based pigments, the artist creates paintings that possess both meditative stillness and monumental presence. Deities, sacred symbols, flora, and mythological scenes unfold across his surfaces with rhythmic elegance, reflecting centuries of inherited iconographic knowledge. While deeply committed to authenticity, Muthukulam’s practice transcends preservation alone; his murals carry a timeless contemporary resonance that has brought Kerala muralism onto an international stage. His works have been exhibited globally, including recognition at the Vatican Museums, where his celebrated reinterpretation of The Last Supper in Kerala mural style was presented by the Government of Kerala.
Today, through both his artistic practice and his role as mentor and educator, Suresh Muthukulam continues to safeguard and expand the legacy of Kerala mural painting — transforming an ancient sacred tradition into a living and globally admired contemporary art form.
