Artist, Amiya Battacharya: “Evoking Dreams on Canvas”

Source: HOUSETHOME

Born in 1949, Amiya Bhattacharya is a seasoned artist whose creative journey began at the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship in Kolkata. His artistic career led him to become the Senior Art Director of Ananda Bazar Patrika Groups of Publication. Beyond his professional commitments, Amiya also lends his artistic talents to design art publications for the Center of International Modern Art in Kolkata and creates striking covers for Penguin Books India.

Amiya's paintings are imbued with profound emotions and a unique sensitivity, evident through his distinct palette and iconography. His dreamlike and somewhat surreal compositions often feature elements like outstretched hands, chairs, the moon, various flora, and flowing drapery. His color spectrum spans from rich burgundy and ochre to earthy browns and rust, occasionally graced by the presence of blues. Women, rendered from the back with bare shoulders or from the side with flowing tresses, frequently populate his creative landscapes. These figurative elements are complemented by architectural devices that play with spatial dimensions, including columns, arches, steps, staircases, open windows, trellises, and black-and-white checkered parquet patterns.

The late eminent senior Bengali artist, Bikash Bhattacharjee, serves as a significant source of inspiration for Amiya. His artistic footprint extends far and wide, with extensive exhibitions held across India and internationally. Amiya's works adorn numerous prominent collections both in India and abroad. He currently resides and works in the vibrant artistic hub of Kolkata.
