Artist, Madan Pawar: “Capturing Jodhpur’s Cubist Poetry”

Source: HOUSETHOME

Born in 1985, Madan Pawar's artistic journey originates from the heart of rural Maharashtra, a place seldom ventured by many into the bustling cities. His pursuit of art began with a Diploma in Art Teaching from the Govt. School of Art, Aurangabad, in 2006. This small-town artist's aspirations led him to Mumbai, where he achieved a First Class distinction in his BFA at the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art in 2010, and later completed his MFA at the same institution in 2013.

Mumbai, with its towering skyscrapers and sprawling slums, marked a stark cultural contrast for Madan. However, it was an educational sojourn to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, during his art school days, that transformed his perspective forever. The golden sunrays on a winter afternoon in 'The Blue City' left an indelible impression on his artistic sensibility. While Jodhpur's every aspect intrigued him, it was the geometric marvel of the city, with its cubical structures adorned in shades of blue, grey, and ochre, that captivated Madan, becoming his enduring muse.

In his artistic expressions, Madan primarily employs acrylic paints to render long shots, aerial views, or sweeping panoramas of Jodhpur. His paintings reveal the essence of the entire city in one panoramic sweep, punctuated by tiny windows, occasional streets, and staircases leading to open terraces. Madan's artwork radiates intrinsic simplicity, often devoid of human presence. His predominantly blue canvases, interspersed with subdued pinks, ochres, and reds, offer a fresh and distinctive perspective on a city steeped in history, culture, and architectural grandeur. There's a three-dimensional quality to Madan's creations reminiscent of the works of the 19th-century Post-Impressionist French painter Paul Cezanne.

Madan Pawar's artistic prowess has been recognized with several awards, including the National Academy Award at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2015, The Bombay Art Society Best Painting Award in 2015, and the Indo-Swiss Students Achievement Award in 2013. In 2018, he held a solo exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, showcasing his remarkable talent. Madan has also participated in various group exhibitions at esteemed galleries like Tao Art Gallery (Mumbai), Nehru Centre (Mumbai), Red Earth Art Gallery (Vadodara), Chirari Academy (Pune), and Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi).

His creations find a home in corporate collections both in India and abroad, with institutions such as The Shipping Corporation of India, MSRDC Mumbai, Maharashtra Times Mumbai, Alan Chun Japan, and Uttarayana Art Foundation Vadodara, showcasing his captivating art. Presently, Madan Pawar is a practicing artist and a professor at the Ideal Institute of Architecture in Wada, Mumbai. His art is a poetic exploration of Jodhpur's cubist beauty, drawing viewers into the city's enchanting geometry and history through his canvases.
