Energy in Motion: The Inner Landscapes of Ashis Mondal

Source: Housethome

Artist, Ashis Mondal  is a contemporary painter whose practice is driven by an enduring inquiry into energy, motion, and the inner dimensions of human existence. Trained at the Indian College of Art and Craftsmanship under Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, he has sustained a focused and evolving studio practice for over two decades.

At the heart of his imagery lies the recurring presence of the horse, rendered not as a literal subject but as an enduring metaphor. It embodies velocity, instinct, and transformation—shifting between the rawness of untamed force and the quiet discipline of lived experience.  His canvases are marked by layered surfaces and rhythmic movement, where form appears to dissolve and reassemble, echoing cycles of change and adaptation. There is an unmistakable dynamism in his brushwork, balanced by an underlying meditative quality that invites prolonged engagement.

With an extensive exhibition history that spans solo presentations in Kolkata and New Delhi, alongside numerous group exhibitions across India and international platforms, Mondal’s work has steadily reached a wider global audience. His practice has also been acknowledged through accolades such as the Nidhu Roy Award.

Continuing to live and work in Kolkata, Ashis Mondal approaches painting as an evolving journey – one that navigates between structure and spontaneity, material and metaphysical, form and the unseen forces that shape it.
