Artist, Vishnu Sonavane, brings together the sensibility of a painter, draftsman and visual storyteller through works that are at once socially conscious and deeply atmospheric. Trained at the Government School of Art in Aurangabad and later at the prestigious Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts, Sonavane developed a distinct visual language rooted in both classical discipline and cinematic imagination.
His early association with the Animation Section of the Film Division shaped his nuanced understanding of movement, drama and composition — qualities that continue to resonate across his canvases. Acclaimed for his evocative ink and pen portraits, he received recognition from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 1991, followed by honours for Creative Contribution at the 38th National Film Festival.
Sonavane first garnered significant attention as a painter with his landmark exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery in 1992. His works, often layered with subtle social commentary, are distinguished by their masterful interplay of light, shadow and texture. Drawing inspiration from the tonal richness of the Renaissance, he employs luminous, sensual palettes that lend his compositions an almost theatrical depth. Through diffused surfaces and emotionally charged imagery, Sonavane constructs meditative spaces where realism dissolves into mood, memory and human introspection.
