This was a brand-new house handed over to us for making it a “home” which is simple, cosy, comfortable and fresh. A home which is not so glamorous that it feels less like home and more like hotel. A home which is so simple that it sometimes allows us to be messy.

Accommodating all the needs of a joint family within a city dwelling is no mean feat. This particular one was even more challenging as this dwelling isn’t a single space, but a combination of separate apartments—four in this case, of which three were originally 1BHK apartments each and one was a 2BHK home.

58, Nirant Bungalow design could have been a typical bungalow that looked exactly like its neighbors. And even when the Architecture is unchanged, what the Usine team has done for this house is apparent right from that entrance porch.

The clients had floating pieces of ideas for what they needed in each of the spaces individually and thus, agreed against the notion of one overarching concept for the entire house.

“The Sparrow Nest” : A 2,400 sqft, Hyderabad Home by Manikath Chava

The common focal point of this 2,400sqft apartment is to keep the decor stylish with different colours and also by giving some traditional touch. We opted for fine colours in the living area and further added wood and veneer to give the space warmth.

This 3 bedroom Mumbai apartment has been renovated by architect Sahiba Madan of Insitu / Kalakaari Haath for a young working couple (the designer herself and her husband). Originally bought as additional space for the couple’s parents who lived on a lower floor, the apartment has remained untouched for over 7 years.

Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around this apartment soaring above an upscale South Mumbai neighbourhood. Much of the home is a canvas in itself — one that frames many of Mumbai’s historic hotspots like the coastline and Mahalaxmi racecourse. By day, stunning panoramas take care of the odd hankering for the outdoors.

The clients are a creative couple, wanting a space which was formal, with a lived-in feel. They had visualised a space which was earthy and close to nature in as many ways possible. Therefore the challenge was to design contemporary cloth with an eclectic weave going through its every thread, this space eventually shaped up ‘as a home close to paradise’.

The spaces of this house in southern Kerala are organized around the beautiful large trees which were existing on the site. The idea was to create a series of spaces that open out onto the green seamlessly. Water bodies add another layer, creating spaces that are one with nature.
