“Echoes of Sky and Earth : “The Abstract Language of Naina Maithani”

Naina Maithani’s abstract paintings are deeply atmospheric works that translate memory, landscape, and emotion into luminous fields of colour. Her practice is guided less by representation and more by sensation – capturing fleeting impressions of place, light, and movement that linger in the artist’s consciousness long after the moment has passed.

A largely self-taught artist, Maithani’s engagement with the art world began while working closely with a contemporary gallery in New Delhi. Immersed in this environment, and later inspired by encounters with artists during her time in Vietnam, she gradually developed a visual language rooted in intuitive abstraction and expressive colour.

Her canvases are built through layered acrylics, where translucent washes, textured surfaces, and subtle tonal transitions create a sense of depth and quiet luminosity. Rather than depicting landscapes directly, Maithani distils their emotional essence – allowing colour, form, and atmosphere to evoke the experience of being within nature.

The artist’s life across multiple geographies has left a clear imprint on her work. Memories of Dehradun’s Himalayan landscape, along with impressions from Vietnam, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and India’s evolving urban environments, emerge as abstracted visual echoes within her compositions. These works often suggest horizons, shifting skies, and elemental terrains without ever settling into literal form.

Since returning to Dehradun in recent years, Maithani’s engagement with the mountains has become particularly pronounced. Expansive skies, seasonal transitions, and the quiet rhythm of the natural world now inform the meditative quality that characterises much of her recent work.

Colour remains the central force within her practice. Through layered pigments, diffused edges, and delicate variations in tone, she creates expansive colour-scapes that oscillate between serenity and intensity. The paintings unfold slowly, inviting viewers into moments of contemplation rather than immediate resolution.

Maithani’s creative philosophy is also informed by her long-standing practice in energy healing, lending her work an introspective and spiritual dimension. Her canvases often function as immersive visual environments where colour, texture, and movement converge to evoke both inner reflection and the vastness of the natural world.

Over the past decade, Naina Maithani has established a distinctive voice within contemporary Indian abstraction. Her work has been exhibited widely and forms part of private and corporate collections across India, Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Working from her studio in Dehradun, Maithani continues to explore abstraction as a space where landscape, memory, and inner experience dissolve into a dynamic and evocative visual language.
